The good news is that with proper care, they could last a lifetime, but that depends on how well you treat them, and what materials they’re made of. Here’s a closer look at the individual components that make up your prosthetics, and how long each could help keep your smile working its best!

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Every dental implant is comprised of three equally important parts: the implant posts, the abutments, and the teeth, which could either be a crown, bridge, or denture. Each of these individual portions has its own lifespan, which will vary depending on its materials, use, and how well it’s cared for.

Dental implants

Dental implant posts are either made of titanium or zirconia. Both metals are biocompatible and carry a high success rate when integrating with the jaw; however, zirconia is a bit less corrosion-resistant than titanium. Still, despite this very minor difference, both metals have the potential to last more than 30 years.

Abutments

The abutment is the piece that connects your prosthetic teeth to the dental implant post. Abutments are made of the same material you select for the implant and thus are just as durable. However, abutments may need to be replaced sooner, as they are less protected within the mouth than the posts.

Crowns / Bridges/ Dentures

Your replacement teeth are the only portion of the dental implant that is completely visible outside the gums, and thus the least protected. It is also the easiest to damage, but thankfully the most affordable and fastest part to replace. They can be made of acrylic or porcelain; however, porcelain is typically much more durable.

How Can I Make My Dental Implants Last?

Although the materials used to make your dental implant are extremely important, to make your treatment last as long as possible you’ll need to do your part to keep your mouth healthy and strong. Here are a few care guidelines:

Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily.

Use a soft bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothbrush.

Visit the dentist every six months for your biannual check-up and cleaning appointments.

Never use your dental implants for anything but chewing on food. No tearing packaging, biting fingernails, or gnawing on pen caps!

If you grind your teeth or play sports, speak to your dentist about having a custom mouthguard made.

Never use tobacco products of any kind. This includes smoking, vaping, dabbing, and chewing.

Remember, your new dental implants were designed to permanently replace missing teeth, but they’ll only last if you take care of them. Thus, to ensure they have the best odds possible, be sure to maintain excellent oral hygiene, avoid bad oral habits, and only use them to chew food. With those tips in mind, your new smile could last a lifetime!

About Our Practice

At Orange Place Family Dentistry, Dr. Koops and Dr. Mollica are proud to offer smile-saving treatments like dental implants right here in Beachwood.
