Orthodontic Care | Keeping Your Teeth Clean Even With Braces

August 28, 2017

Dr. Faist wants everyone to have a perfect smile. For your mouth to be truly happy, it should be sparkling and also healthy. However, those of you who are undergoing orthodontic care may find it difficult to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Unfortunately, germs, bacteria, as well as food particles, now have more places to hide in your teeth.

Although it is difficult for people with orthodontic aid to maintain the health and shine of their teeth, Dr. Faist has laid out some steps to help you keep your mouth healthy through your orthodontic procedure.

Step 1: Make use of an electric toothbrush.

Electric toothbrushes will be able to help make up for any problems caused by brackets and wires that are in your mouth. Getting rid of as much plaque and tartar in your mouth as possible is important in keeping a healthy mouth. Electric toothbrushes are more effective at cleaning out any buildup in your mouth.

Step 2: Brush more frequently.

It is recommended to brush two times per day, but if you are going through an orthodontic treatment, brushing after every time you eat will help stop the build up of food.

Step 3: Use products containing fluoride.

The next time you buy toothpaste and/or mouthwash, be sure that the product you choose contains fluoride. Fluoride toughens your enamel as well as prevents cavities.

Step 4: Make sure to brush the correct way.

Even using an electric toothbrush, the technique you use to brush is still important. For brushing your top teeth, slant the brush down to be sure that plaque and tartar are eliminated. For the bottom teeth, angle your brush up. In addition to this, it is recommended to brush each tooth for about ten seconds and target the spots where the brackets are connected to the teeth.

Step 5: Continue flossing.

If you do not continue to floss, you have much higher chance of developing gum disease and cavities.
