5 Tips to Keep Your Smile Healthy This Summer

What are you planning to do this summer? Maybe you’re gearing up for a road trip to the beach. Or maybe you’re ready to kick back and relax by the pool every day. No matter what your summer plans are, something to keep in mind is your oral health. A healthy smile doesn’t just look good—it feels good too, and oral health problems can easily bring you down and derail your summertime fun! Here are five tips from your dentist in Beachwood to help you maintain a bright and healthy smile all throughout the season.

1. Drink Plenty of Water

Your body is mostly water—but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be drinking it constantly! Water is the absolute best beverage for your teeth, as well as your whole body. Drinking it throughout the day helps to keep your mouth moist and stimulates the natural flow of saliva. This can assist in washing away plaque-causing bacteria, and it helps to freshen your breath.

2. Pick Tap Water

There’s nothing wrong with bottled water; it’s especially convenient for when you’re on the go. But you should opt for tap water whenever possible. Tap water often has fluoride added to it, which is a naturally occurring mineral that’s very good for your teeth! Fluoride re-mineralizes your teeth’s enamel, strengthening it and increasing its resistance to decay.

3. Stay Away from Soda and Carbonated Drinks

An ice-cold Coke or tall glass of lemonade is a great way to cool off during those hot summer days, but drinks like these are often very sugary and acidic. Frequently enjoying them can lead to your tooth enamel becoming damaged and worn down—and once your enamel is gone, it’s gone for good! Not to mention, many of these drinks also contain staining agents that can dull and discolor your smile.

4. Use A Straw

Drinking through a straw can reduce the amount of contact between your teeth and whatever it is you’re drinking. So, if you can’t resist the urge to slurp down a cold soda, at least enjoy it through a straw! It also helps to finish your drinks quickly, rather than sipping them slowly over time.

5. Try Drinking Tea

Believe it or not, certain teas have many health benefits, including compounds that can suppress bacteria! This can help to slow down the development of tooth decay and gum disease. Just be mindful of teas that have sugary additives; these can still harm your teeth.

Summer vacation does not mean taking a vacation from your oral health! Ensure that your smile remains bright and white throughout the season by following these tips and watching what you drink.
