Gum Disease: Various Other Risks and Causes

November 20, 2017

In our last blog post, we explained that tartar buildup brought on by plaque is believed to be the root cause of periodontal disease, but what else can cause this disease? In this article, we explore some of the other factors that can increase your risk of periodontal disease.

Hormonal changes – Things such as menopause, pregnancy and other hormonal changes can be factors in the onset of gum disease.

Weak dental hygiene routine – The chance of periodontal disease can increase significantly with improper care of your teeth and gums.

Diabetes – Links between diabetes and an increased chance of gum disease has been found in studies.

Age – Age can contribute to the development of periodontal disease.

Heredity – Genetics could play a role in the chance of gum disease. People with a family background of gum issues really should have routine visits to try and get ahead of it.

Medicines – There are certain medicines that could be a factor in increasing the chances of gum disease.

These issues and others (substance abuse, tobacco use, poorly fitting dental work, bite changes, bad nutrition, etc.) could enhance your likelihood of periodontal disease.
