Gum Disease: What are the Causes?

November 6, 2017

Did you know gum disease is one of the most common chronic health problems? It impacts roughly half of all adults over the age of 30. In a 2010 study, it was found that more than 65 million adults lived with gum disease.

It’s important to understand that periodontal disease is fairly common and has an effect on our general well-being. In our last blog, we looked at the signs of periodontal disease, but what actually causes periodontal disease?

Many researchers and specialists strongly believe that plaque is the primary cause of gum disease. Plaque is a bacteria that creates a film on our teeth and gums. It is formed when sugars and starches in our food merge with the already existing bacteria that is in our mouths. If permitted to stay on your teeth for extended periods of time, it can easily harden underneath the gum line, developing a tartar build-up.

Implementing proper brushing and flossing techniques at home is necessary for combating plaque build up, but only a professional dental cleaning can clear away tartar completely.

It is important to stop by your dentist on a routine basis for cleanings and exams to prevent the build-up of tartar and gum disease.
